Dystonia

Stefan Scheleich

Guitarist

I discovered new and very interesting perspectives on how to play and study, especially related to the technique of differential learning.

As far as I can see, the history of my dystonia seems quite typical of what many musicians have to endure when they face this condition: in the beginning, more or less small issues with the motor patterns of my right hand; then, serious difficulties playing certain pieces from my repertoire; later on, the appearance of uncontrollable cramping while playing — at first only in some arpeggios, tremolos, etc. — and eventually even during slow and easy passages. I had to cancel concerts, stop playing chamber music and, in the end, I even had problems playing with my students at school. A disaster that lasted for more than six years.

The attempts I made to solve these problems are probably also familiar to many musicians struggling with dystonia: first trying out new fingerings and playing techniques; then doing retraining sessions with the "Dispokinesis" method; later, Botox injections; and changing technique again… Some of these things helped for a while, but in the end the problems got worse… Until I started treatment at the Institut de l’Art in Terrassa.

"Now, after the treatment at the Institut de l’Art, I can say that this stage of my life is over and my dystonia is 100% cured!"

It wasn’t an easy path for me, but with the help, patience, and kindness of Sílvia Fàbregas i Molas and Dr. Rosset Llobet, I managed to push through and overcome this condition. And more than that: I discovered new and very interesting perspectives on how to play and study, especially related to the technique of differential learning. The way of working with my body and music that I learned in Terrassa has truly enriched my relationship with the guitar and with learning music. It has been, and continues to be, a very important gift in my life, and I am deeply grateful. Thank you very much!
